Using Sandbags to Keep Your Home Dry During a Rainstorm in Mission Valley?

12/17/2024 (Permalink)

Sandbags are positioned next to a fence to prevent storm water from entering a home. We respond to storm damage emergencies 24/7 in San Diego.

Our local Mission Valley East team is trained and certified to restore damage from heavy rain. Sandbags are an effective, quick solution to prevent water from entering your home during a rainstorm. To use them effectively:

  1. Start by choosing sandbags made of burlap or polypropylene, as these materials are durable and resist water well.
  2. Place sandbags in vulnerable areas, such as doorways, garage openings, and low-lying entry points.
  3. Stack the bags in a staggered brick-like pattern, overlapping each bag to create a seal that minimizes gaps where water can seep through.

When filling the bags, only fill them halfway to allow the sand to shift and mold easily, creating a tighter barrier. Avoid overfilling, as bags that are too full can be difficult to stack and may not sit tightly together.

Place the folded, open end of the bag inward so water pressure pushes it closed rather than opening it. If you can access a tarp, place it over the sandbags to help improve the seal and direct water away from the area.

After the storm, remove sandbags carefully as they can become contaminated by floodwater. Dispose of or store them properly to prepare for the next rainy season. With these steps, sandbags can offer a reliable defense against storm-related flooding.
