Time for Trivia: Things You Never Knew You Needed to Know

  • “that” vs. “which”

Use “that” for information necessary to understand the sentence, and “which” for information that is not necessary for readers. “Which” phrases should be surrounded by commas. FDR’s famous sentence should have been written this way:

December 7, 1941, a day that shall live in infamy…

Here’s a good example of the correct use of “which”

SERVPRO of Mission Valley East, which is locally owned and operated, wishes all the best for its neighbors in Southern California.

2) Idioms with the word “home”

The lights are on, but nobody’s home An expression that makes a person analogous to an empty house with lights on, a person who is awake and alert, but dimwitted (the lights may be bright, but the person is not)

Go big or go home      Put in a big effort, or just don’t try all. Our favorite variant is lie big or go home; if you’re 5’9”, don’t bother telling people you’re 5’10. Tell people you’re 6’4” – or just don’t bother saying anything.

At home “Jack and Jane feel at home fixing airplanes” means “Jack and Jane feel comfortable fixing airplanes.”
