Linda Vista Community Learns About Cooking Safety During Residential Fire Awareness Month?

Do you know that October is Residential Fire Awareness Month? The theme this year is cooking safety as the leading cause of kitchen fires are cooking fires. Our local Mission Valley East team responds to fire damage emergencies every year in Linda Vista and offers these tips for cooking safely from the National Fire Protection Association:
Cooking with Children
- If you cook with kids, have a “kid-free zone” of at least three feet around the stove and areas where hot food or drink is prepared or carried.
Preventative Measures
- Be on alert! If you are sleepy or have consumed alcohol don’t use the stove or stovetop.
- Stay in the kitchen while you are frying, boiling, grilling, or broiling food. If you leave the kitchen for even a short period of time, turn off the stove.
- If you are simmering, baking, or roasting food, check it regularly, remain in the home while food is cooking, and use a timer to remind you that you are cooking.
- Keep anything that can catch fire (oven mitts, wooden utensils, food packaging, towels, or curtains) away from your stovetop.
