Clogged Storm Drains Cause Flood Damage in Mission Valley Homes?
12/10/2024 (Permalink)
We are water damage restoration leaders in San Diego.
Our local Mission Valley East team is trained and certified to restore property damage caused by heavy rains. Clogged storm drains can lead to significant flooding in residential neighborhoods during heavy rain events. Storm drains are designed to carry rainwater away from streets, sidewalks, and yards, preventing water from pooling and causing damage. However, when debris such as leaves, dirt, trash, or branches becomes blocked, they can no longer function properly, leading to excess water accumulation.
During a heavy rainstorm, blocked drains can cause water to back onto streets and properties, overwhelming drainage systems and resulting in localized flooding. Water that can’t drain away quickly may pool in low-lying areas, saturate lawns, and even seep into homes, causing water damage to basements, foundations, and lower floors. Standing water on roads can also become a hazard for vehicles and pedestrians.
The longer the storm drain is clogged, the more water accumulates, leading to potentially severe flooding. Homeowners can mitigate this risk by regularly inspecting and clearing storm drains near their property, ensuring that rainwater flows smoothly during heavy rain events.
Our local governments play a crucial role in maintaining proper drainage systems to protect neighborhoods from flooding during intense weather conditions.

Small Earthquakes Can Weaken Pipes and Lead to Water Damage in Tierrasanta?
12/3/2024 (Permalink)
We are water damage restoration leaders in San Diego.
Our local Mission Valley East team restore water damage in Tierrasanta homes every year. According to the City of San Diego website, about 35 earthquakes are reported every day. Although most of these earthquakes do not cause significant damage, plumbing pipes can be compromised by the movement in the ground.
Even small earthquakes can cause significant damage to a home's plumbing system, particularly by weakening solder joints that hold pipes together. The shaking can cause pipes to rattle and shift when an earthquake occurs, creating stress on their joints. Solder joints connecting copper pipes are especially vulnerable to this movement.
While they are designed to be strong, seismic activity's continuous vibration and pressure can weaken the bond over time. This may not result in an immediate leak, but over weeks or months, the joint can loosen, leading to slow water leakage.
Once a solder joint fails, water can escape from the pipe, potentially causing hidden water damage. If left unnoticed, the leak can deteriorate drywall, flooring, and even structural elements of the home. Homeowners in earthquake-prone areas should regularly inspect their pipes for signs of damage and consider reinforcing their plumbing systems to withstand seismic activity.

Tips for Protecting Your Mission Valley Home from Water Damage While Away for Thanksgiving?
11/25/2024 (Permalink)
We restore water damage 24/7 in San Diego.
Our local Mission Valley East team wishes everyone a Happy Thanksgiving! Do you know that many water damage episodes occur when people are away from their homes? If you plan on traveling this Thanksgiving, you might want to protect your property so you don't return to a flooded house.
One of the most important things you can do is to locate and shut off your main water supply valve. This prevents water from flowing into your home if a pipe bursts while you're gone. Locate your valve before you leave and turn it off to avoid any potential leaks.
Although less common in San Diego County, cold snaps do occur, and frozen pipes can cause significant damage. You may want to insulate pipes that are the most vulnerable to freezing. To further safeguard your pipes from freezing, leave faucets dripping slightly. This helps relieve pressure in the pipes, preventing them from freezing and bursting in colder temperatures.
Consider installing water leak detectors if your home has a smart home system. These devices can alert you to leaks in real-time, allowing you to act before significant damage occurs, even when you're not there.
These preventive measures let you enjoy your holiday with peace of mind, knowing your home is protected from potential water damage.

Heavy Rain Forecasted for Grantville This Winter?
11/19/2024 (Permalink)
We are storm damage restoration leaders in San Diego.
Our local Mission Valley East team restores storm damage caused by heavy rain every year in Grantville, California. Heavy rainstorms can cause significant water damage to homes, often in ways that homeowners may not anticipate. For instance, water intrusion through windows, doors, or cracks in the foundation is a common form of damage. As water accumulates around the exterior of your home, it can seep into crawl spaces and through walls, leading to dampness, mold growth, and structural deterioration over time.
Flooding is another major concern during heavy rainstorms. Water can accumulate around your property when the ground becomes saturated and drainage systems are overwhelmed. This can damage not only the foundation but also landscaping and outdoor structures like decks or patios. If water reaches the interior of your home, flooding can also damage electrical systems and household appliances.
In some cases, rainstorms can cause soil erosion, destabilizing the ground around your home and leading to shifts in the foundation or driveway. Roofs can also be compromised if gutters are clogged or the sheer volume of rain overwhelms the roofing materials, resulting in leaks.
Proper home maintenance, including gutter cleaning and drainage away from the property, prevents water damage during heavy rainstorms.

How Leaking Window Seals Can Lead to Damage During Heavy Rain in Clairemont Mesa East?
10/7/2024 (Permalink)
We restore storm damage 24/7 in San Diego.
Our local Mission Valley East team is a leader in storm damage restoration services in Clairemont Mesa East. Heavy rain can reveal weaknesses in your home's structure, particularly around windows. Leaking window seals are a common issue that can cause significant damage if not addressed promptly. When seals around your windows fail, water can seep into your home, leading to many problems.
Water intrusion through leaking seals can damage interior walls, causing paint to bubble and peel. Over time, moisture can weaken drywall and even lead to mold growth, which can rapidly spread to other parts of the structure.
Additionally, when exposed to constant moisture, wooden window frames and surrounding structures are susceptible to rot. Beyond the immediate damage, leaking window seals can also affect your home's energy efficiency. Moisture inside the walls can compromise insulation, leading to higher heating and cooling costs.
To prevent this type of damage, it's essential to inspect your window seals regularly, especially before a heavy rainstorm. Look for signs of wear, such as cracks or gaps, and repair or replace seals as needed. By addressing leaking window seals early, you can protect your home from the costly effects of water damage.

Loose Pipe Solder Points: A Hidden Threat to Your Home’s Plumbing in Allied Gardens?
9/30/2024 (Permalink)
We restore water damage 24/7 in San Diego.
Our local Mission Valley East team is a trusted leader in water damage restoration services in Allied Gardens. A loose pipe solder point might seem minor, but it can lead to significant property damage if addressed.
Solder is used to join copper pipes, creating a watertight seal that ensures the plumbing system functions properly. Over time, however, these solder joints can weaken due to thermal expansion, vibration, or even poor installation.
When a solder joint becomes loose, it can result in slow leaks that gradually worsen, causing water damage to walls, floors, and ceilings. The constant dripping of water can lead to mold growth, structural damage, and even electrical hazards if the water comes into contact with wiring. Detecting a loose solder point early is crucial to preventing extensive damage. Signs include:
- Visible water stains
- Dampness around the affected area
- A sudden drop in water pressure
Regular plumbing inspections and maintenance can help catch these issues before they escalate. If you suspect a loose solder joint, it’s essential to have a professional plumber repair it immediately to avoid costly repairs and ensure the integrity of your home’s plumbing system.

The Hidden Dangers of Malfunctioning Garbage Disposals in Clairemont Mesa East?
9/3/2024 (Permalink)
We are water damage restoration leaders in San Diego.
Our local Mission Valley East team responds to water damage emergencies in Clairemont Mesa East 24 hours a day. Garbage disposals are a convenient kitchen appliance, making waste disposal quick and easy. However, when they malfunction, they can cause significant residential property damage.
One of the primary issues arises from leaks, which often develop at the seals or connections. These leaks can be slow and insidious, gradually causing water damage to the cabinets, floors, and even the walls surrounding the disposal unit.
A malfunctioning garbage disposal can also cause blockages in the plumbing system. If not properly disintegrated, food residues and grease can build up in the pipes, resulting in blockages. This can result in wastewater backing up into the sink, potentially overflowing and causing water damage to the kitchen area.
Regular maintenance and proper garbage disposal usage are crucial to prevent these issues. Avoid disposing of fibrous, starchy, or greasy items, as these can cause blockages. Regularly inspect the disposal for leaks and ensure the unit is securely attached to the sink. If a problem is detected, addressing it promptly can save homeowners from the extensive and costly repairs associated with water damage.

8/13/2024 (Permalink)
We restore water damage 24/7 in San Diego.
Our local Mission Valley East team is a trusted leader in water damage restoration services in Serra Mesa. Sprinkler systems are designed to maintain a lush lawn, but they can cause significant property damage when they malfunction. Common issues include broken or misaligned sprinkler heads, leading to uneven watering or water wastage. Overwatering can cause soil erosion, plant damage, and even structural damage to the home if water seeps into the foundation. Leaking pipes or valves can also waste water and increase utility bills, creating wet spots that damage lawns and structures.

Flooding Causes Appliance Failure in Mission Valley?
5/28/2024 (Permalink)
We restore water damage 24 hours a day in San Diego.
Our local Mission Valley East team is trained and certified to restore water damage – no matter how extensive the damage may be. Some inexpensive parts and supply hoses found in household appliances that are common causes of water damage include:
Rubber Washing Machine Hoses: Rubber hoses used to supply water to washing machines are prone to deterioration and cracking over time. When these hoses fail, they can release significant water into the home, leading to flooding and damage to flooring, walls, and nearby belongings. Replacing rubber hoses with stainless steel braided hoses can help mitigate this risk as they are more durable and less prone to failure.
Dishwasher Supply Line: The supply line that delivers water to the dishwasher can also cause water damage if it develops leaks or becomes disconnected. Regularly checking the condition of the supply line and replacing it with a braided stainless steel hose, if necessary, can help prevent potential leaks and water damage in the kitchen area.
Regular inspection and maintenance of these inexpensive parts and hoses can help homeowners identify and address potential issues before they cause water damage. Additionally, replacing older or deteriorating components with more durable alternatives can provide added peace of mind and reduce the risk of costly repairs due to water damage.

Recent Rainstorm Causes Water Intrusion Issues in Linda Vista Home?
5/14/2024 (Permalink)
We are leaders in storm damage restoration services in San Diego.
Our local Mission Valley East team has the training, equipment, and experience to restore water intrusion damage from heavy rains quickly and efficiently. For years, Linda Vista residents have relied on us to restore their storm damage “Like it never even happened.” Here are some less noticeable instances of water intrusion that may occur during heavy rain:
HVAC System Leaks: Heavy rain can expose vulnerabilities in HVAC (heating, ventilation, and air conditioning) systems, such as damaged ductwork or condensation drainage issues. Water intrusion into HVAC systems can lead to mold growth, equipment damage, and indoor air quality issues.
Cracks in Concrete: Cracks in concrete driveways, sidewalks, or patios can allow rainwater to penetrate the soil beneath the surface, potentially leading to erosion, settlement, or even undermining of the concrete slab.
Flat Roof Ponding: Heavy rain on flat or low-slope roofs can result in ponding water if proper drainage is not maintained. Ponding water can eventually find its way through cracks, seams, or penetrations in the roof membrane, causing leaks and water damage to the interior of the building.
Landscape Grading Issues: Poorly graded landscaping around a building's foundation can direct rainwater towards rather than away from the structure, leading to water intrusion through basement windows, doors, or other vulnerable points.

Leaking Air Conditioner in Tierrasanta Home Causes Water Damage in Ceiling?
4/23/2024 (Permalink)
We restore water damage 24 hours a day in San Diego.
Our local Mission Valley East team has been restoring water damage for Tierrasanta residents for many years. Air conditioners can fail and cause water damage in a home through several mechanisms:
Clogged Drain Line: Over time, the condensate drain line of an air conditioner can become clogged with dirt, algae, or debris. When this happens, water accumulates in the drain pan and may overflow, leading to water damage around the air conditioner unit.
Frozen Evaporator Coil: If the evaporator coil of the air conditioner freezes due to restricted airflow or low refrigerant levels, it can cause ice buildup. When the ice melts, it can overwhelm the drain pan, resulting in water leakage and potential water damage.
Cracked or Damaged Drain Pan: The drain pan beneath the evaporator coil is designed to catch condensate and direct it to the drain line. If the drain pan becomes cracked or damaged, water may leak out onto the floor or surrounding areas, causing water damage.
Condensate Pump Failure: In some air conditioning systems, a condensate pump is used to pump water from the drain pan to a drainage point. If the condensate pump fails or becomes clogged, water may back up and cause overflow, leading to water damage.

Mission Valley Home Exposed to Dangerous Black Water During Flooding Event?
4/16/2024 (Permalink)
We restore flooding damage in San Diego.
Our local Mission Valley East team has been restoring water damage caused by flooding in Mission Valley for many years. Black water contamination during a flooding event poses severe risks to both residents and property.
Black water, typically originating from sewage backups or overflowing rivers, contains a potent mix of harmful pathogens, including bacteria, viruses, and parasites, presenting a significant health hazard. Exposure to these pathogens can lead to various waterborne illnesses, such as gastroenteritis, hepatitis, and skin infections, endangering the well-being of residents.
Additionally, black water carries a foul odor due to its organic content, creating an unpleasant and unsanitary living environment. The high levels of contaminants in black water can also cause extensive property damage. When black water infiltrates a home, it saturates porous materials such as drywall, carpeting, and insulation, promoting mold growth and compromising structural integrity. Also, it can corrode metal fixtures, electrical systems, and appliances, rendering them unsafe or inoperable.
Finally, the presence of black water increases the likelihood of long-term damage to the building's foundation and supports, necessitating costly repairs and remediation efforts. Overall, black water contamination poses a dual threat to residents and property, requiring immediate evacuation, thorough disinfection, and professional restoration to mitigate health risks and prevent irreversible damage.

Mission Valley Homeowners Use Sandbags to Prevent Water Intrusion During Heavy Rain Event?
3/5/2024 (Permalink)
We are leaders in storm damage restoration services in San Diego.
Our local Mission Valley East team witnesses firsthand the damage that heavy rain can cause to a home. Proper placement is crucial to effectively prevent water intrusion using sandbags during a heavy rain event. Here's some tips on where to place sandbags:
Identify Vulnerable Areas: First, assess your property to identify vulnerable areas prone to flooding or water intrusion. These may include doorways, windows, low-lying areas, and entrances to basements or garages.
Doorways and Windows: Place sandbags in a pyramid or staggered pattern to create a barrier around doorways and windows. Stack the sandbags on top of each other to form a solid wall. Ensure the first layer is well-seated against the ground to prevent water from seeping underneath.
Low-Lying Areas: If you have areas prone to flooding, like driveways or basement entrances, create a wall of sandbags to redirect water away from these spots. Ensure the sandbag barrier is sloped to guide water away from the property.
Check for Leaks: Monitor the sandbag barriers during a heavy rain event. Ensure that there are no gaps or leaks in the placement. Add additional sandbags if needed.
Protect Utilities: If your property has outdoor utilities, like electrical boxes or HVAC units, use sandbags to create protective barriers around them to prevent water damage.
Emergency Exits: Clear pathways to emergency exits and avoid blocking them with sandbags to ensure safe evacuation.

Heavy Rain Brings Flooding to Low-Lying Areas in Mission Valley?
2/20/2024 (Permalink)
We are leaders in storm damage restoration services in San Diego.
In Mission Valley, certain areas are more prone to flooding due to their geographical characteristics and proximity to water bodies. Notably, the San Diego River runs through Mission Valley, and its floodplain is a primary concern for flooding. Our local Mission Valley East team responds to flood damage emergencies every year due to:
Riverfront Areas: Locations along the San Diego River, such as the Fashion Valley and Hazard Center areas, are particularly susceptible to flooding. The river can overflow its banks during heavy rainfall or storm events, inundating low-lying areas.
Low-Lying Zones: Low-lying areas, including parts near Camino del Rio and Hotel Circle, are vulnerable to flooding. These areas lack elevation and natural barriers to prevent water from pooling during heavy rains.
Urban Development: Much of Mission Valley has seen extensive urban development, with concrete surfaces replacing natural absorptive landscapes. This increases runoff during rainstorms, leading to faster and more significant flooding, particularly in areas with poor drainage infrastructure.
Historical Flooding: Over the years, the area has experienced several instances of flooding, leading to increased awareness of flood-prone regions. Efforts have been made to improve flood control infrastructure, but the risk remains in certain areas.
Local authorities have implemented flood control measures, such as levees and stormwater management systems, and improved urban planning to mitigate flooding.

Cracked Pipe Fitting Causes Flooding in Serra Mesa Home?
2/13/2024 (Permalink)
We are leaders in water damage restoration services in San Diego.
Our local Mission Valley East team restores water damage 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Several types of pipe fittings in a home's plumbing system can crack or fail, potentially leading to water damage. These fittings include:
Compression Fittings: These fittings are commonly used with copper or plastic pipes and rely on a compression ring to create a watertight seal. If the compression ring or the fitting itself becomes damaged or corroded, it can lead to leaks.
Threaded Fittings: Threaded connections, often used with galvanized steel or iron pipes, can develop leaks if the threads become corroded or damaged. Over-tightening during installation can also lead to cracks.
Push-Fit or SharkBite Fittings: While convenient for DIY installations, push-fit fittings can fail if the O-rings inside deteriorate or if there is excessive pressure. A cracked or improperly seated O-ring can result in leaks.
PVC and CPVC Fittings: Plastic pipe systems, like PVC and CPVC, are susceptible to fittings cracking under extreme temperature fluctuations or if they are subjected to excessive stress or impact.
Pex Fittings: Although PEX (cross-linked polyethylene) is generally durable, improperly installed or crimped PEX fittings can leak over time.
Regular maintenance, inspection, and proper installation are essential for preventing these fittings from cracking or failing, which can lead to potentially costly water damage in a home.

Broken Pipe Floods Tierrasanta Neighborhood?
1/9/2024 (Permalink)
We restore water damage 24 hours a day in San Diego.
Our Mission Valley East team responds to water damage emergencies throughout the year in Tierrasanta. Water damage from broken pipes can cause significant damage if it is not mitigated quickly. A broken water main can cause flooding and damage to an entire neighborhood for many reasons:
Flooding: The primary and most immediate concern is flooding. When a water main breaks, it releases a high volume of pressurized water into the surrounding area. This water can quickly inundate streets, yards, and even homes, leading to property damage, structural instability, and potential safety hazards.
Erosion: The force of the escaping water can erode the soil around the breakage site, which may lead to sinkholes or the undermining of roadways, sidewalks, and nearby structures.
Property Damage: Floodwaters can infiltrate homes and businesses, causing extensive damage to personal belongings, furniture, appliances, and building structures.
Disruption of Services: A broken water main can disrupt essential services, including water supply and sewage systems. Loss of water pressure or contamination of the water supply may affect residents' daily lives and health.
Road Closures: The flooding and damage to roads can lead to road closures, traffic congestion, and detours, inconveniencing residents and businesses and affecting local transportation.

Our teams have the training, equipment, and experience to mitigate and restore storm damage easily and efficiently. Powerful rainstorms are known to move through our region, causing flash flooding and property damage. Here are some things you can do to prevent water intrusion from a heavy rain event:
Install Proper Drainage: Ensure your property has proper grading and drainage systems in place to direct rainwater away from your home's foundation. Consider installing French drains or a sump pump if necessary.
Clean Gutters and Downspouts: Keep your gutters and downspouts free of debris to ensure proper water drainage. Clogged gutters can lead to water overflow, which can damage your home's foundation and siding.
Maintain Your Roof: Regularly inspect your roof for leaks, damaged shingles, or flashing issues. Address any needed repairs promptly to prevent water infiltration during heavy rains.
Landscape with Care: Choose water-resistant landscaping materials and consider using mulch and plants that can absorb excess rainwater. Properly grade your yard to divert water away from your home.
Emergency Preparedness: Have a plan in place for heavy rain emergencies, including storing important documents, creating an emergency kit, and knowing how to turn off utilities if needed.

Poor Drainage Causes Water Intrusion and Damage to Homes in Clairemont Mesa East During Recent Downpour?
11/20/2023 (Permalink)
We respond to water intrusion emergencies 24 hours a day in San Diego.
For years, Clairemont Mesa East residents and businesses have relied on our local Mission Valley East team to restore storm damage. Our technicians use powerful water extraction and drying equipment to remove the excess water quickly and dry the damaged area thoroughly. One common cause of water intrusion from heavy rain is poor drainage around the foundation of the home or building.
If a property lacks proper drainage systems, such as French drains or adequate sloping away from the foundation, heavy rain can lead to pooling water around the foundation. This standing water can gradually infiltrate the foundation, causing water intrusion. Additionally, over time, the foundation and walls of a building may develop cracks due to settling, shifting, or external pressures. Heavy rain can penetrate these cracks, allowing water to enter the structure, leading to flooding and damage to interior walls.
To prevent water intrusion issues during heavy rain, proper grading and drainage systems should be in place to direct rainwater away from the foundation. Additionally, waterproofing measures can be applied to vulnerable areas to provide an extra layer of protection against water intrusion. If water intrusion problems persist or are severe, it may be necessary to consult with a professional contractor or waterproofing specialist to identify and address the underlying issues.

Floodwaters Contaminate Homes in Mission Valley?
6/6/2023 (Permalink)
We are leaders in water damage restoration services in San Diego.
Our local Mission Valley East team responds to storm damage emergencies every year in Mission Valley. Stormwater can carry dangerous chemicals, bacteria, and untreated sewage so it is important to take safety precautions after flooding occurs. Here are some safety tips from the National Centers for Disease Control and Prevention:
- Don’t drive in or through flooded areas or standing water—cars or other vehicles won’t protect you from floodwaters. They can be swept away or may stall in moving water.
- Do not drink flood water, or use it to wash dishes, brush teeth, or wash or prepare food
- If you evacuated, return to your home only after local authorities have said it is safe to do so
- Listen for boil water advisories. Local authorities will let you know if your water is safe for drinking and bathing.
- During a water advisory, use only bottled, boiled, or treated water for drinking, cooking, etc.
- When in doubt, throw it out! Throw away any food and bottled water that comes or may have come into contact with floodwater.
- Prevent carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning. Use generators at least 20 feet from any doors, windows, or vents. If you use a pressure washer, be sure to keep the engine outdoors and 20 feet from windows, doors, or vents as well. Never run your car or truck inside a garage that is attached to a house even with the garage door open.

Damaged Pipe Floods Linda Vista Home?
5/30/2023 (Permalink)
We are leaders in water damage restoration services in San Diego.
Our local Mission Valley East team has been restoring water damage for Linda Vista residents and businesses for many years. Our technicians are on call 24 hours a day to respond to water damage emergencies. We use powerful water extraction equipment to remove the bulk of the water quickly and monitor and document the drying process to ensure the area is dried thoroughly. One common cause of broken pipes is a condition called a water hammer.
Water hammers result when a faucet or appliance and then switch off the water abruptly. Water is pressurized, so it hits the end of the line and sends shock waves through the pipe. When the shock waves radiate throughout the pipe, an audible clatter can occur that makes a banging sound that can knock, or bang against anything nearby, like a wall. If the pipe “hammers” long enough, it can break and cause water damage.

Water Damage Prevention Tips for Mission Valley Residents?
1/17/2023 (Permalink)
We respond to water damage emergencies 24-hours a day in San Diego.
Our local Mission Valley East team is highly trained and certified to restore water damage quickly and efficiently. Last month heavy rain brought flooding and road closures to the Mission Valley area. Here are some suggestions from the Federal Emergency Management Agency for protecting exterior areas of your home from stormwater.
- Install a rain barrel. A rain barrel is an alternative method for dealing with rainwater. Rain barrels are typically connected to gutter downspouts and collect the runoff from roofs. You can use this stored water for non-potable uses such as watering the lawn and gardens or washing your car.
- Maintain proper water runoff and drainage. Routinely clean and maintain gutters, downspouts, and splash pads, so rainwater from your roof flows easily away from your home. Also, make sure that any nearby drainage ditches or storm drains are clear of debris and functioning properly.
- Reduce impervious surfaces around your home. Water runs off concrete and asphalt almost immediately and can quickly exceed storm sewers’ capacity quickly during heavy rains. Retaining and creating natural green space around your home can help reduce sewer overflows by reducing stormwater runoff. Consider options such as rain gardens, vegetated swales, or pervious pavements, which allow more water to be absorbed by the ground.

How Can I Tell if My Swimming Pool is Leaking in Mission Valley?
9/6/2022 (Permalink)
We are leaders in water damage restoration services in San Diego.
The Environmental Protection Agency reports that leaking swimming pools may weaken your home’s foundation and lose thousands of gallons of water each month. Our Mission Valley East team offers these helpful tips from the EPA to determine if your pool is leaking:
- Grab a clear container and a marker
- During the test period, turn off the pool auto-fill, do not manually add water to the pool, and avoid splashing water out of the pool
- Put the container on the pool steps and mark the water level on the outside of the container
- Now, fill the container with pool water up to the mark you just made so the levels match
- Mark the water level inside the container
- Now, wait and give evaporation time to work, usually two to three days. If it rains or is windy, you’ll have to perform the test again.
- Place the container on the pool steps. If the water in the pool is lower than the water in the container, you have a leak
- If both the pool level and the container water levels are the same, you do not have a leak

How Do I Know if I Need Water Damage or Flood Insurance for My Mission Valley Home?
6/7/2022 (Permalink)
We are trusted leaders in water damage restoration services in San Diego.
Do you know if you need flood insurance? If you live in Mission Valley, you may live in an area that floods from time to time. Our local team in Mission Valley has been restoring water damage for many years. Here is some helpful information from the Insurance Information Institute (III) about water damage insurance:
Water Damage Insurance
According to the Insurance Information Institute, different types of water damage are insured by different policies. It will be important to review your standard homeowner’s policy to determine any additional coverage you may need. For instance, some policies cover sewer and drain backups, but many do not. In these cases, you can purchase a sewer backup rider for your homeowners or renters coverage.
Burst pipes and wind-driven rain are generally covered by homeowners and renters insurance policies. Basically, any water that comes from the top down, like rain or a burst sprinkler, is covered by a standard homeowners policy.
Flood Insurance
Typically, water that comes from the bottom up, like flooding from an overflowing river, will be covered by a separate flood insurance policy and can be purchased from the federal government’s National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) and some private insurers. If you live in a flood-prone area, learn more about appropriate coverage.

Leaking Toilet in Grantville?
11/29/2021 (Permalink)
We restore water damage 24-hours a day in San Diego.
SERVPRO® of Mission Valley East has years of experience restoring water damage in Grantville. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) reports that the average household’s leaks can account for more than 10,000 gallons of water wasted every year, or the amount of water needed to wash 270 loads of laundry. Here are some tips from the EPA for detecting a toilet leak:
- One way to find out if you have a toilet leak is to place a drop of food coloring in the toilet tank. If the color shows up in the bowl within ten minutes without flushing, you have a leak. Make sure to flush immediately after this experiment to avoid staining the tank.
- If your toilet is leaking, the cause is often an old faulty toilet flapper. Over time, this inexpensive rubber part decays, or minerals build up on it. It’s usually best to replace the whole flapper, which is a relatively easy and inexpensive do-it-yourself project that pays for itself in no time.

Rain Gutter Damage in Mission Valley?
7/5/2021 (Permalink)
We are trusted leaders in water damage restoration in San Diego.
When working correctly, rain gutters can help prevent water intrusion and damage to your Mission Valley home. SERVPRO® of Mission Valley East offers these tips from expert Bob Villa on how to tell if your rain gutters are damaged:
Inspect your rain gutters for visible signs of cracking. Use some binoculars to inspect for smaller cracks. If you see extensive cracking, replacement is required.
Inspect gutter seams for damage where two horizontal sections meet.
Inspect your home’s paint job for evidence of paint peeling, it may point to rain gutter failure. Check the section of the rain gutter closest to the paint damage for leaks. If there are more than a couple of leaks, you may want to replace the rain gutters.
Inspect your home’s exterior wood elements for rotting windowsills or door jambs. You may have clogged rain gutters or inadequate storm drainage.
Inspect the exterior of the home for mildew damage. If there is moisture accumulating around or near the foundation, mildew can grow. This is a sign your rain gutters are not working properly.

Water Bill Too High in Serra Mesa Home?
Did you know that your water bill can be a good indicator of a hidden water leak? SERVPRO® of Mission Valley East offers these tips from the EPA on finding water leaks:
Take a look at your water usage during a colder month, such as January or February. If a family of four exceeds 12,000 gallons per month, there are serious leaks.
Check your water meter before and after a two-hour period when no water is being used. If the meter changes at all, you probably have a leak.
Identify toilet leaks by placing a drop of food coloring in the toilet tank. If any color shows up in the bowl after 10 minutes, you have a leak.
Examine faucet gaskets and pipe fittings for any water on the outside of the pipe to check for surface leaks.

Clogged downspout in Mission Valley?
A homes drainage system can be compromised by leaves and other debris standing in the rain gutters, and this debris can fall into the drain spout and clog the drainage system, allowing water to back up and flood the roofing materials, or the downspout at the end of the drainage system can be improperly sloped, allowing water to pool around the home’s foundation, rather than shedding away from the home. Did Your Broken Hot Water Heater Leave Your Business Flooded in Mission Valley?
6/4/2020 (Permalink)
Water damage is no joke in San Diego.
Hot Water Heaters Cause Major Damage
My hairdresser rents a space inside a multiple use building that houses over 100 individual beauty salons. Last year, the two huge hot water boilers that heat the water for the entire building went out and flooded one entire wing of the building overnight. All the drywall had to be replaced in the hallway. Some of the salons had water damage. The carpet and carpet pad and baseboards had to be torn up and replaced, too. It was a good thing that SERVPRO was called in to mitigate the damage because the building was open seven days a week. In fact, the repairs were done overnight every night until they were completed, which took about a week. SERVPRO® of Mission Valley East wants San Diego residents to know that when your business experiences water damage, we will work to minimize the disruption and get the repairs completed as quickly as possible.

Commercial Flood Insurance in Mission Valley East
12/14/2019 (Permalink)
Flooding and water damage are no match for SERVPRO of Missin Valley East
The National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) provides flood insurance. The NFIP doesn’t sell insurance. Buy flood insurance from an insurance agent.
SERVPRO of Mission Valley East is interested in helping the businesses in our community become more educated on flood insurance. According to FEMA, 40% of small businesses do not reopen after experiencing a devastating flood.
Things to know in San Diego. Check to see if you might be required to have flood insurance.
- All agencies in San Diego charge the same for flood insurance
- Standard commercial insurance doesn’t pay for flood damage
- The NFIP sets the rates
- Rates depend on:
- whether you live in a flood plain
- flood risk in your area
- building’s age
- building’s construction
- Building property insurance covers the building
- Personal property insurance covers the building’s contents
- NFIP suggests you need both types
- Policies go into effect 30 days after purchase
- The NFIP help center number is 1-800-427-4661
SERVPRO of Mission Valley East recommends the following:
- Check whether or not your area participates in the NFIP
- Check whether or not your area is part of the Community Rating System. The NFIP might have a discount
- Talk to your insurance agent when you need to make changes
Make sure your business is protected from the devastation that comes with unwanted flooding in your office.

Tips for Standing Water in Mission Valley
12/9/2019 (Permalink)
A flood doesn’t end once the storm stops. We still have to deal with all that standing water. The floodwater can take up to 11 days to disappear. It’s not time to go fishing.
If you have to evacuate your office, do not go back until you have been told it is safe.
Be careful driving in Mission Valley. Remember to “Go around. Don’t Drown!” The water may still be too deep for safe travel.
Floods are not natural swimming pools
- Sewage, debris, and other unpleasant things can be in the stormwater leftovers
- Swimming, wading, or rafting can make you sick
- Don’t drink the water
- Water conducts electricity. Underground power lines can give you a dangerous shock
Floodwaters vs. Animals in Mission Valley:
- Snakes and other animals may get into your building. Wear work boots and heavy gloves when you clean up
- Some animals might find your office a cozy place to live
- If tap water is unsafe to drink, it is unsafe for your pets

Staying Healthy around Standing Water in San Diego
12/9/2019 (Permalink)
Staying safe when flooding and water damage occurs.
Staying Healthy Around Standing Water in San Diego:
Standing water of any kind in San Diego can be a powerful source of disease. Floods can be worse due to the amount of water involved. Even small puddles can pose a risk.
Different kinds of debris can be found in floodwater such as dead animals, rotted plants, and sewage, to name a few. If you have water damage inside your home, watch for debris in the home as well to include rotted food and electrical problems.
Viruses and bacteria can cause illnesses. To reduce your chances of catching something, SERVPRO of Mission Valley East suggests:
- Washing dirty clothes and towels in hot water. Use bleach if possible
- Remember that you can shake hands with an infected person and get infected.
- Do not allow children to play in the flood water
- Wash children’s hands before meals
- Disinfect toys before letting children play with them
- Use bleach or other disinfectants on hard surfaces
- Keep your hands washed
Cuts and rashes can become infected. Protect yourself and others in San Diego:
- Avoid floodwaters if you have an open rash or a cut
- Clean cuts or rashes. Cover them with a waterproof bandage
- Clean cuts with soap and clean water
- If a cut becomes red, swollen, or is oozing, get medical attention

Possible Causes for Water Damage in San Diego
12/9/2019 (Permalink)
Water damage can be messy, we can help.
Causes & Categories of Water Damage in San Diego:
An old poem has the line, “water, water, everywhere”. When you need to say this in your home or office, you know there is trouble. You may be looking at water damage. There are several different possible causes of water damage in San Diego.
Causes can include:
- Leaky dishwashers or washing machines
- Clogged pipes
- Leaking roofs
- Broken toilet pipes
- Heavy rain
- Snow or ice
The amount of water damage depends on the amount of water and on the cause of the damage.
It is also important to start the cleanup as soon as possible. The longer your home or business is water-logged, the more damage.
Categories of Water Damage in San Diego:
- Clean water. It might come from an overflowing sink or a broken appliance. The water does not pose a threat to people. Keep in mind that any water will become contaminated after it stops flowing.
- Gray water. This water is contaminated from the get-go. It comes from broken toilets or sump pumps. It might not look dirty, or it might be brown.
- Blackwater. Like gray water, it might not look dirty. One major source of black water is broken sewage pipes. Another source is any water that has been standing still.

Toilet Leaks Can Seem Small but Create A Big Mess

Toilet Leaks Can Seem Small but Create A Big Mess
A leak from a toilet may seem like a little issue; more of a headache then an actual issue, but even a small amount of water can call a big mess. Many people may see just the water on the floor around the base of the toilet and think that just mopping up the mess will take care of the problem, but damage can be much more excessive then is visible.
It is not uncommon for toilets to malfunction and leak or have a wax ring fail and cause water damage, but it makes it no less annoying and frustrating when it happens to you, in your home. SERVPRO of Mission Valley East has been helping with water damages from toilet leaks and pipe breaks for many years and our trained and experienced crews of technicians are ready 24/7, 365 to respond and help you when disaster strikes. We are ready to help you.
